Report: Tommy’s Legacy got the better of the ‘General’ from the last road but outside the ‘general’ was in charge mainly due to ‘ Tommy’s’ making a mistake after ten minutes which virtually ‘put him out of contention.

In the pup trail Crazy established an early lead ,showed in front and was never in any danger finishing clear of Blue Solo ‘

The open maidens and once more a clear cut victory, this time it was Westgate Rose followed by non other than four Foxparkes.

Four of which make up an entry of Eighteen hounds for the forthcoming International from the Napier kennel.

Report. Flaming June , somebody forgot Coniston , it was more like January with the lights on.

On that note it doesn’t seem likely that both Jenny’s Aura and Galemire Grace should find water most tempting , yet they did and that opened the door for Ladybird to take her first win of the season much to the “delight” of his owner.

The pup trail developed into a four hound event – victory going to Huntsman’s Major who just held the challenge of Cuchulainn with table leader Miterdale Shadow  a close third.

The non-winners , not on the field for this race, but outside six hounds broke away from the rest, I couldn’t name them , but they were all the same colour.

There is a saying in hound trailing that ”  if your hounds a maiden and it’s sound and fit then don’t run it in the restricted trail but when you’ve had only one run in three weeks you wouldn’t expect to win— ” famous last words” as they say ! . Kenmore stopped,  looked around and Jazz Band took his opportunity and although going around the back of the Judge was still the winner.” Can I look in the camera ” said his owner I think  He was only second”.

And in the fastest time of the evening Kerrymore won the veterans from Free Spirit and Westgate Belle.

Report: Buttermere ,one of the most picturesque trail fields, with excellent viewing , easy access , trailing at its best and on a windy night a double for the Glenridding kennel when last years puppy champ Jenny’s Aura started her senior campaign with a hard fought victory over long time leader Quiet Linnet and Huntsman’s Major took advantage of a mistake by a few of the leaders to complete the double in emphatic form finishing well clear of the fast finishing Kinniside Meg.

Metal Mickey aka Lone Rebel took the maidens, after leading for most of the way, in front of Wansfell (Boston) and these two were well clear of the rest.

In the final event and a first success of 2017 for Christine Brownlee when Marlou beat Dairy Lightning and Jenny’s Rose.

That was a four timer for the Keswick area an omen perhaps for Latrigg Top.

Report. The forecast was thunder storms and they were right but luckily their timing was out and the trails had just concluded when the heavens opened and in minutes the lanes were awash, making looking for missing hounds almost impossible, luckily all hounds were accounted for including one which  ended up in Egremont dog pound.

The seniors was a disappointing affair with only three runners none of which had run there and the result was that all three retuned to the start

The pup trail and once again “ A Long One” these were led in by Black Legend his second win of the week, the first four were well clear and the rest” strung out like Monday’s washing.”

The last two trails seem to fare much better and as for the details they are a tad scarce as I embarked on a reuniting mission.

I can say that Tommy’s Legacy led the restricted at the second last road and the maidens ,watch the video.

Report. A nice warm evening for the first Cockermouth and Workington trails of the 2017 season . And a little bit of niggle , ” it’s that HTA mixture ! you mean the same formula that has been used for over 100 years is to blame for anything that goes wrong!

Lets look at the times of the trails especially the pup trail ( running for the first time )

2017  – 21.55   2016- 20 -45    2015- 20 27    2014 -19.47           2013 -22.45             2012- 22.00      2011 19.33   2010      2009  17.25    2008- 21 02     2007 22.03.

These are the last ten years which presumably has been run over the same course – the odd one out is 2009 which Dairy Diamond ran in 17.25 but on the Whit Monday trail ran it in over 19 mins.

The average time, taking out the slowest and fastest,  is around 20 minutes, considering the weather, it wasn’t a bad effort.

The rest of the meeting and former puppy champion Persian Bay got of the mark with a length victory over another former champ , Prudence and Miterdale Shadow recorded his  twelfth win when he outpaced the rest of the field putting daylight between him and his rivals on the long finish.

The non- winners and this trail was decided by the cattle, just as the hounds appeared on the finish, they decided to charge splitting them all over the spot, three of the hounds managed to find a way around and claiming a victory was Thorn Dollar caught by a reluctant Phil Graham ( not accustomed to catching winners) in front of Mamma Mary and Bess.

And the all -in went the way of the points leaders Persian Sky and Thorn Fire and that was after an unprecedented scale , lets face it on a nice night there is no point in rushing and it was a pleasant night to take in the view. I blame the mixture! the third trail on the dead rag on a warm night and of course nobody saw the live game, “what live game” ! that which nobody saw !.

The International entry forms are available and trail mixture will be internatiomal  ie Paraffin and aniseed with oil added if deemed necessary.

Report. The quickest route from Kirkland to Lazonby , as the crow flies, turn left to Sowerby Row next right proceed for a couple of miles and come to the road you have just left. Bollocks!

In the seniors Prudence showed her liking for the course and she won in “hack canter” from “Denzil ” aka Washington with the improving Eclipse in third.

The puppy trail and -finally- Rio got his head in front, after a number of frustrating seconds, this was at the expense of Jenny’s Breeze who was also seeking her first win. and in the non-winners John Loan’s Steel End got the better of Westgate Autumn in a close finish and the last betting race saw favourite Cracking Gold hold off the challenge of Sultan followed by the two Summers – Rose and Dancer.

Report: Firstly , a question? When was the last time one kennel turned out 18 runners at one meeting – in the words of the “Boss”

” The whole lot are running ” and what’s more is there anybody else had 18 available runners. ?

Runner-Up in last seasons Championship , and with the untimely demise of the Champion Bracelet, Overwater Arnie, pre- season favourite, notched up win number two and looks destined to be a lively contender for top honours this season. And in the pup trail Miterdale Shadow won easily and win number 11 takes him well clear in the junior table honours.

In the maidens nobody would begrudge a win for two of trailing’s stalwarts , none other than the “Town Crier” and his wife Dot who’s Wild Gypsy got the better of  sibling Miterdale Steele and in the last David Crowe , who’s partner Marie is recovering from illness had a nice win with a recruit from the overwater kennel in the shape of “Jack” ,second was the consistent Free Spirit and Quiet Linnet third.

The first of two meetings at Rusland, the picturesque valley between Windermere and Coniston, a hidden valley, or in trailers terms ” Where the hell is it “. . Turn left , turn right and follow the road to the “back of beyond”, And if you don’t succeed the first time then Try -try Again.

The senior trail and after 12 minutes and in view of the spectators Song Bird , took a right instead of a left and ended up going the wrong way around. Kenmore scored his first success at the expense of Jenny’s Delight and Persian Bay.

The pups and an excellent race developed between Miterdale Shadow , Black Legend, and Huntsman’s Major, they finished in that order with only a length between them but in the following trail Lone Rebel finished ” a proverbial mile in front “, apparently the stock at the final road had a say in proceedings.

The last trail the all-in could have been easily mistaken for a veterans when four of the six were of that ilk. Debra won for the young ones, she’s only five.

After his narrow defeat by “Atnie”on Monday , Tommy’s Legacy was made a short odds -on fav and after leading onto the finish was passed by maiden Kinniside Joe, Tommy was reported to have a pad problem but that doesn’t lessen “Joe’s ” victory as it is quoted ” the last shall be first and the first last”, The” General” led at Bowness Knott – ” Joe” was last.

The pup trail and once more the clash between the two top contenders and this time it was the superior finishing speed of Crazy that landed the spoils with another two Kinnisides in third and fourth.

The maidens and despite stopping and waiting ,Cool return after dropping back to second got up to defeat yet another kinniside this time “Beauty”

The All-In practice trail was next and Thorn Fire made six out of eight.
