Report. Hound trailing is struggling , it’s dying on it’s feet, so say the pessimists. the optimists hope for better days and as only 127 hounds turned out at Plumpton on the first day of organised practice trails, How many ?  ” Only 127 ” perhaps they are right.

The juniors came onto the finish in a bunch , anyone of ten in with a chance, James McClellan’s  Miss Ada finished  strongly to beat Aaron  Horn’s”  Integrity “. In the group were Westlife, Thorn rose, Wait and See representing the “gingers”.

The first senior trail was won in fine style by Huntsman’s Nimrod finishing clear from Best Mate,Jennie’s oracle and “Cuckoo” and a minute slower in next were Hunter’s Dale , a head in front of Copperfield and Eden Raya.

Report  The eagerly awaited clash between championship challengers, miterdale  shadow and  crazy  did not materialise as shadow was never in contention and crazy went awol, when well clear , apparently deer hunting, this left the door open and Mystery bound took full advantage to win ,

Opal short- headed cracking in the pups and winning the last Hawkswood came out of the fells to win at sea level..

Report . The late start to the first trail put pressure on the veterans ,who finished in half-light,and it was well over the line that it dawned upon the public that Dawn had her first success of the season.

The day got off to a bad start for the punters when Miterdale steel threw  away a winning lead, unexplainably stopping and turning back and subsequently interfering with best mate,, the outsider of the ten runners, a Cilla black moment for the Chair and partner Caroline.

The maidens, it was reported , had taken the scenic route via mirkholme and the trail was declared void , over the time limit.

The pup trail and all seven were in striking distance as they swooped down the last hill where one ‘s mouth began o water at the sound of Opal wins the “sweets”beating all six and the clock.

FP Rambling rose won the non – winners after a prolonged  struggle with Some Lad both nearly ending up in overwater.

Eleven restricted hounds were in with a shout as they approached the last field where Eden Raine got the better of Showbiz and a host of others close behind,.
