Report.

Many thanks to the work put in by the Ulverston Area and their volunteers, after the disappointment of the first venture, they turned things around and under adverse weather conditions provided five trails with exciting finishes.

Thanks to all the farmers and landowners, sponsors, and, without naming them in case somebody’s missed, the scouts , trailers ,gatekeepers  etc.

The main event of the afternoon on what was an extremely windy one was the Bitch Produce and the odds on favourite and table leader Jenny’s Aura justified her short price with a ten metre victory over Overwater Hally, the breeders prize went to the owner, out of Jenny’s Pride by Endeavour and her sister Canny Mover was third.

And continuing with the Open pups her litter brother Miterdale Copper won with siblings  Just Mick in third and Huntsman’s Loyal in fifth. The latter two hounds were unlucky as they ran wide on the finish but all plaudits to ‘Copper’ and the General who provided us with another photograph finish, the result being known with a shout of delight from the ‘Miterdale Steeles’.

The day started with the seniors and four hounds were vying for honours in the end they were shared between Lady Bethan and the fast finishing Washington with Huntsman’s Jenny just behind and an excellent run by Daisy Dream in fourth.

The senior maidens , and not for the first time a complete b**** up. Firstly and this is only conjecture and with hindsight, the hounds were walked to the slip practically down the finish, then lined up in an arc causing a concertina effect  after slipping, then all of them missed the road crossing and did a tour of the starting field , some then struck the trail ,whilst ten others jumped the wall and after a ‘meeting’ struck the finishing end and ran the trail in reverse. The trail was declared void and first past the post in the right direction was Persian Prince , a Westgate, Trooper Thorn and in the other direction Sambuca, Sental, another Westgate and one from Ennerdale.

Just a thought – A westgate went one way and one went the other I wonder if they acknowledged each other as they passed.

The largest field of the day and here the enigmatic Thorn Fire was having a going day and made a winning leap over the tape to justify favouritism beating Dawn, Razzle Dazzle and Eden Rossi in a bunched finish.

In the veterans and a double on the day for the ‘undertaker’ with Louise , when Simply Rascal got the better of Kerrymore in another head bobbing finish, with Artisan a close third.

Marton provides magnificent  views over Morecambe Bay and The Irish sea over the Furness peninsula but when the wind blows , it blows and when it rains , it rains. It’s called ‘ Trailing weather’ and we love it.

Report.

Wet but mild and is it essential that we trail on Thursday before a major event? Only seven hounds contested the first two trails! Nevertheless they produced two exciting finishes- in the seniors Debra had a good lead after 15 minutes and although the favourite Bracelet joined her on the finish , it was Debra that came away to win by a few lengths.former champ Prudence was well behind at halfway but finished in tremendous style to get third and wont be long before opening her account for the current season.

In the juniors Just Mick was trying for a quick double but this time He was Eclipsed By Eclipse and in the non- winners it is always the case of winning for the first time but sometimes it is the owners of the winning hound that are having a rare visit to the winner’s enclosure. Lisa and Graham Whitfield with Cool Enough being the latest , perhaps a good omen for the next two weekends !, It’s cool enough for him it’s cool enough for me, Sugar Ray Robinson.

And in the All-In- well ! Cartier won easily from Thorn Fire in the impending gloom, the rain came shortly afterwards but all was safely gathered in!

All roads lead to Marton on Saturday for the Bitch Produce which has been shortened from the last trail, by about a pup trail!

Tipster competition will be organised by Heidi and Baz’s tips are ——————————————- Take waterproofs- watch out for Geoff’s ditch- LOL

Report. ‘ It’s a funny old game’ quote from footballing, well so is hound trailing.

In the Redmain seniors Tommy’s Legacy and Arizona were joint favourites and when the hounds showed at half way  it  was Dairy Lightning who was in front and he stayed there to almost the tape where Bracelet and the fast finishing Washington passed him, the two favourites were well back in umpteenth place. Those hounds at the top of the Senior Championship could be soon looking over their shoulders to see dual Champion Prudence in contention.

The puppy trail and a fine example of when you win a maiden an open trail isn’t far away, and Just Mick did just that. He and Huntsman’s Loyal stole a march on their rivals and finished well clear, Mick winning by the shortest of heads.

In the maidens and Jazz Band led them a merry old dance . He and Sunset Ridge established a clear lead and he kept going to the ‘ sound of silence’ and got over the tape ,quite a rarity for ‘Laddie’, to win easily .

The All -In and a win for former champ Endure who should be back on the winning trail soon.

Maybe.

Report. We wont dwell on what happened but suffice to say that all hound men should check their leaders for signs of wear and tear and the hound involved in the incident is on the mend.

That wasn’t the only incident – superstition was disqualified in the last race for interference- that’s failed to enter- disqualified – ran off – stopped in gutter- all in one weekend.

Back to the trails and field and dyke specialist – Overwater Arnie applied his skills to the fells and complimented last week’s fell race with a ten meter win over Quiet Linnet , who was rested over the weekend.

The pups and Jenny’s Aura won easily from ‘Copper’ in what developed into a two dog race and in the last Chinook finished well to beat Superstition and Lady Anne.

Report.

First our thoughts are with Graham Birkinshaw and George Birkett, who are both in ‘dock’- get better soon .

The International trail at Tallentire and thanks to the Cockermouth and Workington Committee for all the hard work they put in to make it a really exceptional days trailing. Thanks to all the farmers and sponsors .

We welcomed our Irish and Yorkshire friends as well as the Border members.

Thanks go to the ladies who provided official refreshments apparently a certain family will be on pies and sandwiches for the rest of the week.

Just to single out a few – Margaret + Tuts , gatekeepers, Christine raffle guru ,Darren  Phil and Neil, trailers plus the two Irish lads who walked with them, all the scouts and officials.

Just a note on the PA system, apparently it fought a losing battle with the background chatter and is now mothballed. It is on E-Bay and is on offer at a reasonable price especially if you make a book.

The trails and in the seniors the cows and sheep on the finish didn’t help – but nevertheless the favourite Overwater Arnie ( I’m Back) overhauled Tommy’s legacy on the uphill finish , in front of Try Again and Arizona

It might be worth pointing out that the maidens running on the dead rag were only four seconds slower than the seniors, interesting!

And the first five shouted out were the first five home, similarly in all other trails .only to be vilified and ‘bollocked’, obviously a job for somebody more qualified!

Back to the trails and Les Tyson’s Lady Anne responding to Louise’s encouragement got up to deny Trooper Thorn in a closely run race.

In the pups table leader Jenny’s Aura was well supported but finished unplaced as Silver Dusk and the ‘ General’ fought out the finish victory going to ‘Dusk’ as the ‘General faded in the final strides , the water in the penultimate field played a role in the result as more than one stopped for a ‘lap’.

The pup Maidens after scaling at halfway were considerable slower than the open pups but nevertheless plaudits to Just Graham and Just Les with Just Mick

He won comfortably from the consistent Telstar with Meadow Elsa in third and a Foxparke .

The restricted trail and the well supported Dairy Lightning won well for Steven Riley and turning up for the trail non other than Arthur Temple ( A tip in its self)

Lightning responded well to the call of Nicola  46 years young,, who allegedly ,with her big sis Tanya had told their husbands that they were going shopping in Penrith as they were on holiday at Center Parcs only to divert to the trails., don’t believe their hubbies are that gullible!

In the veterans ( 6+) It was a two hound race on paper and so it proved as once more Artisan got the better of Silver Spangle to win by a length.

A generally enjoyable day , the lone bookie for the last three trails must have known what  General Custer felt like in his last stand.

Our Yorkshire friends were happy with the way their hounds ran but were unimpressed by the Signs.

And plaudits to two kennels , ‘ silver kennel ‘ from Dearham with a first, two seconds, a third and two fourths and the ‘Meadow ‘ kennel with two thirds and a fourth. The Border association, although only getting two tickets, performed with dignity and thanks for running on which could be considered alien territory.

And a final thought all the trails were sponsored and therefore the International coffers will prosper and survive into the future.

Ps. The best turned out of the day including clipped , washed and looking a picture- Mark Bryden!

Open Maidens 1 Artisan 2 Sunset Ridge 3 Rickman 4 Eshdale Matilda 5 Blueboy 6 Sugar Ray . 26 Ran Time 18.42.

Report. After 10 mins the two principles in the seniors were in front , Galemire Grace and Try Again but on the finish Celtic Ty had moved up to second behind ‘Gracie’, who notched up win no three .

The pups and Larty and the ‘General’ were well clear of the field, the former got the upper hand in the final strides and the ‘ General ‘now has nine seconds. Telstar was a good third and these were well clear of the rest.

The maidens and Sugar Ray was made favourite but he and the rest were well beaten by  Artisan , a former class act and now six year old qualifies as a veteran and having had a gap season will prove hard to beat in this grade.

Also Ran.  Issabella – Thorn Dolly – Hunter’s Dale – High Style – Cracking On –  Black Eyed Pea – Cartier – Eden Rocco – Flawless – Highness – Tiagress – Jacob McClink – Jimmy Choo – Remember Me – Carrick – Mickledore – Great Gable .

Report. One of the most unluckiest of hounds must be Jenny’s Aura ,winner twice this week but beaten by the clock at both Marton and last night at Newlands. A tricky start put paid to most of the field and a large scale also at the start added time to what is already a long trail.

The drama wasn’t confined to the pups in the seniors Langdale Ranger came low onto the finish gaining a considerable advantage and was subsequently disqualified for cutting, the race being awarded to the 33/1 outsider Marlou, owned jointly by Eric and Christine .

And if that was not enough in the senior maidens Persian Prince looked to be a certainty coming down the fell towards the finish only to run behind the fell wall gifting the trail to Meadow Josie who is running into form for Saturday’s International.

The Open Restricted and a win for Jenny’s Rose, also surrounded by a shade of controversary, the view taken by the Committee was that where as the senior winner dropped in low and kept low , the last winner although coming in low righted herself and climbed back to the trail.

Pups Void Overtime

The Rest of the meeting was abandoned.

Report. Commiserations to the Ulverston area for a downright awful day. The seniors got away with it running in fine , visible weather and as in the past , on a fresh trail they all came together, well 23 of them appeared on the long uphill finish and Overwater Arnie belying his recent form held on from Washington and Dawn, in what can be described as a dog -dog finish.

The puppy trail and the weather played a part in the time taken but in all honesty it was too long and just as well it was a preview but now the five extra minutes has gone and a review of the trail will be taken. The area committee put in a lot of work and didn’t deserve the conditions and hopefully all glitches will be ironed out before produce day.

The first four in the puppy trail were Jenny’s Aura- Huntsman’s Loyal- Dan’s Lad- Foxparke Fandando.

The International programme is available at £1.

Report. Coniston- up the track to Walna Scar overlooking Coniston Water with views over Morecambe Bay and shadowed by the Old Man Of Coniston.

The senior trail and Ian Hunter’s Galemire Grace, under the watchful eye of Walt and Cath, Ken is on holiday, got up in the final strides to beat Capetown , who is still a maiden. Huntsman’s Jenny was a close up third and watch out for the hound that finished seventh.

The pup trail and a close run race between kennelmates Jenny’s Aura and Huntsman’s Loyal, victory to the former by a length and that win took her to the top of the championship table.

The non-winners and Kenmore and Buble ran low on the finish putting paid to their chances ,leaving the door open for Miterdale Princess with neighbour Billy Whizz in second.

The Restricted trail and the enigmatic favourite Thorn Fire fairly ‘breezed home’, she hasn’t completed her last two runs but no problem last night winning well from the much travelled Mr Ant ( not Saturday but Friday).

In the veterans first year veterans dominated taking first three places , in front was Kerrymore from Simply Rascal and Artisan.

The programme for the International trail is available at £1.

Dearham Thurs June 16th

Seniors 1 Arizona 2 Bracelet 3 Washington 4 Santino.  4 Ran Time 34.01.

Open Restricted. 1  Silver Spangle 2 Sunset Ridge 3 Issabella 4 Remember Me 5 Carrick 6 Foxparke Artist. 13 Ran Time 17.19

Report. Although there were only four runners it was nevertheless an intriguing contest and all four were together for most of the race. onto the finish and Bracelet and Santino showed in front with Arizona in third. Knowing that the owner had a substantial wager on  his charge, Sadie started to shout with great gusto and Arizona scored his first win of the season and will not be a maiden next year.

The pups and would you credit it – Telstar made the same mistake as Tuesday and gifted the race to – not Dawn but Dusk- Silver Dusk , making a double for the Dearham kennel.and in the last Silver Spangle , following up from its veterans win on Tuesday won the restricted trail from Sunset Ridge , making it a clean sweep for Dearham .

A couple of tales from tonight – in the pup trail the message given to the scout was that there was 22 runners , when in fact there were only 21 , therefore there was one hound to cross , its ours said  Geoff and Ian, celebrating Englands win over Wales and consequently they prepared themselves to catch the hound ( with permission) as it was tailed off- they stood at the crossing like two cricketers in the slips – first slip and leg slip and – waited and waited- by this time ‘Bess ‘ had completed the trail and was standing bemused on the finish as there was no catchers, where were they , still standing on the road.  ‘Nuff said.

And if you are still a maiden then don’t win a restricted trail but nobody tells the hound not to win and worse still is if the owner is on holiday and somebody else is caring for the hound suddenly finds himself in this predicament, what do you do , tell it to stop, hope it tumbles, ring ‘scrunt’ and ask him for advice, well! Silver Spangle came to Tut’s rescue and Sunset Ridge lives to win another day.

Report.  One five minute shower on a day forecast to be wet-  so much for weather predictions!

A round dozen seniors for the first of Grasmere’s only two meets and an overdue win for ‘Arnie’ by ten yards from Meadow Josie, making a rare appearance on the ‘fell’ and surprising all especially the vice chair. ‘ second are you sure’ , from the owner.

The pup trail and they coped extremely well with what is a difficult trail , first time of asking, two pups established a clear lead but on the finish there were four in with a shout. And it was Jenny’s Aura that prevailed from Canny Mover and ‘Copper’, the first three are all simarlarly coloured , which can be confusing.

In the restricted , in the fading light, it was once again a ‘silent’ finish until the last few yards when a lone voice called in Menorah when realising it was going to win anyway after Eden Rossi had thrown away the lead, Littman was a close up third.

Report.

A fine night for the first of the Dearham trails and first blood went to Dawn, who led at the first road and the last road and on the finish where she was pressed by Westgate Belle who was in danger of losing her maiden status but Dawn finished the stronger and won by three lengths with Santino close up in third.

The pups and Telstar looked like notching up his first win only to be let down by his jumping missing the penultimate fence and gifting the trail to another maiden Silver Dawn with the third and fourth close up , these were clear of the rest.

Onto the maidens and Trooper Thorn and Cool Return finished well clear and in third Hoggy’s Skidaddle – you probable noticed that Graham caught the second that was because Lisa hadn’t got to get too  excited as she was ‘ imminent’.

In the veterans Artisan came in front , missed the jump, Spangle took over but the wily old Artisan knows where the line is and won by a length.
