Report . Well where do we start- I have been saying for a time now we don’t advertise and place directional signs to show people where we are and not take the attitude everybody knows where to go.

Well now you know how it is when your ‘lost’. Somebody removed the signs from a critical point of the way but at points leading up to this point a lack of signage was evident. The HTA secretary who put the directions on the website got lost and Gerard was last seen heading towards Newcastle. I put on the web ‘follow the signs’ except there wasn’t any . All I can do is apologise on behalf of the International committee.

Next: one of our junior members was told she wasn’t allowed to catch her hound, how she was told is a different matter, but the HTA’s policy on children is ‘ they are the responsibility of their parents and they are not only responsible for them but they will decide if the finish is suitable for their children to participate in.

The venue itself ,it’s a good job it wasn’t wet, also the system – numbering of hounds and starting procedure ,change perhaps!

Once again apologise for the PA this time it flattened the battery . Back to the supplier otherwise I’m giving it to Gordon Tinnion for Xmas.

Now for the trails and I suppose an apt headline is  .Gonsofast they couldn’t catch me.

The senior trail and Border hounds were 1.2.4 and five in the shape of Gonzofast who held off the determined challenge of ‘Denton’to win by a couple of lengths, Overwater Arnie led the HTA challenge with a close third with the Telford pair Tidy and Text next.

The senior maidens and once again the Borders repelled all challengers when 20/1 shot Deepdale Frank bt the unlucky favourite Tommy’s Legacy ,who tumbled on the downhill section of the undulating finish, Delta Spice was third for the home team.

The juniors , and here the HTA held a strong hand and so it proved when they took six of the seven tickets . Mike Watson;’s Persian Sky held off the determined challenge of favourite Arizona to win by two lengths, the unlucky hound was Thorn Dancer who threw away a winning chance by running wide. Fire Bolt in sixth was  the Borders only ticket.

Les and Jeanette ,stalwarts of the non-winners trails in October, readily deserved their success in the puppy maidens. ‘Remember Me ( aka Jazz Band) see video.despite veering left at the tape , had enough in hand to see off a bunch of hounds led in by Venus ,the remainder were neck and shoulders behind and it was an expected clean sweep for the HTA . The minor placings took some sorting out but things were in ‘Ructions ‘capable hands.

The Open Restricted and after a delay the hounds made a mess of the start with some dozen hounds striking towards the senior trail . all but three of these hounds ran the old dog trail . Little Messi was one of the three that struck after the main bunch but was well behind. The irony is that- Sugar Ray was entered in the short trail instead of the maidens due to lack of preparation , only to watch him disappear around the corner on a trip to Spaedadam and back. In the proper race his full relation Shamballa  got up on the line to beat Night Vision with Splendid Zac in third.

Last but least – the veterans and last to be shouted out Tagget, former International winner, was first home in front of Spring roamer and Eagle Heart for the Borders.

Honours even at three apiece .

THANKS go to the farmers and sponsors all helpers, and to yourselves for supporting this event , all those hounds that gave their best ,congratulations to the winners and commiserations to the losers. And by the way how come out of all those who attended our lad and myself both had flat batteries.

Report.

It was a pleasant evening for the first  of the seasons trails at Redmain.

In the seniors  Try Again led from Trooper Thorn, with Prudence stalking the leaders in fifth, at the field crossing. On to the long finish and here the reigning champ had taken up the running and held on well from Aspire and unclipped hounds close behind.

In the junior trail -Billy Bowe had a nice lead at half way but on the finish it was Persian Bay leading with the favourite Arizona in third. The favourite put his ‘best foot forward ‘ and won going away from Persian Bay and the  consistent Silver Charm was a close third.

In the last two trails it was a Kendal double with the Simpson’s Venus and the Dawson’s Razzle Dazzle.

Venus just held on from Delta Dawn with a number of others, all of which had a winning chance.

The last trail and six runners stole an early lead ( only 5 minutes) and here Razzle held off the determined challenge of Keystone with Starlight in third.

Report.

Newlands ,one of the most picturesque trails in the hound trailing calendar, a hidden valley, a little gem. Also well signed !

Twelve hounds took there chance in the seniors and Langdale Ranger took an early lead and his only danger was the clock and as you can see from the result he had sixteen seconds to spare . This was his second win this week and third this season and he becomes a leading contender for Saturdays International.

The senior maidens followed on and ran it nearly as quick as the seniors and leading them home was Shirley’s dad Tommy ,AKA Tommy’s Legacy in front of Huntsmans Jewel and My Way.

The junior trail and after a few minor scales it was left to the Produce winner Thorn Dancer to scoot down the final downhill stretch to deny her maiden sister Marlou  a win ( still a maiden ). The Patterdale pair of Jenny’s Delight and Kracka were third and fourth, once more finishing together. Perhaps first and second on Saturday.

On to the last and as I was on a retrieval mission I missed it but as the saying goes ‘There’s life in the old dog yet’ Could the Veterans go Taggets way on Saturday.

Just looking at tonights results : Four winners for Saturday !.

Wath Brow Mon June 22nd.

Seniors 1 Serenity 2 Celtic Malone 3 Rumours 4 Lady Helen. 4 Ran Time 41.01.

Pups      1 Daisy Dream 2 Stroll On 3 Foxparke Lovebug . 8 Ran only 4  finished. Time 20.05. Also Ran: Cool Momentum,- Cool Miracle -Foxparke Tootie Fruity. -Foxparke Peggy Sue.

Also Ran : Lady Ann .-Kinniside Joe – Cool Return.-Night Shadow -Doll -Irish Pride -Foxparke Invisible.-Ronelle -Yabadabbadoo -turbo – Stand On -Sunset Ridge -Romulus -Spartan.

Report: Only 32 hounds were present at the ‘Brow ‘on Monday evening and ten of  them came from the same kennel!

Only four contested the long senior trail and this was reduced to three ,as a race, when lady Helen took a wrong turn at the start and from there was playing ‘catch up’.

Crossing the Cold Fell road before their descent and then uphill climb to the downhill finish- Serenity established a winning lead when ‘Malone put in a circle and ‘ Rumours’ sat and waited for her. Lady Helen made up a lot of lost ground but ‘shirked’ at the River Ehen’ in the last field.

The pups and, on top of the table, Daisy Dream, who was fed and watered before any other finished. The guide to her performance is the comparable time with the maidens-just two seconds slower.!

And in the maidens -a few with a chance, sorted out ,not for the first time, by the river crossing. Rooster  popped up followed by Glory who on the long grass of the final field, stayed on strongly to beat it by a dog length with the unclipped Free Spirit a close third.

Also Ran  Valhalla -Cinnabar – Casey’s Lass -Thorn Girl.

Report. Much better conditions at Kendal this afternoon than the hard ground of last week. And first a generalisation-  patience is a virtue and Mike and Dot Wilding must have nearly exhausted there’s . After persevering with ‘Bobby’ all last season – he had his back sorted and today ran his first Senior trail and finished a creditable sixth or next to last ,whatever!, and along with veteran ‘Freebie’ ,who was third in the vets, a successful afternoon for the kennel.

Onto the seniors and Langdale Ranger led for most of the race and held off the determined challenge of course winner Ladybird and local Razzle Dazzle to win by five yards.

The juniors and after Arizona had made a mess of the last obstacle ,the race looked a certainty for Persian Bay but she didn’t reckon with sister Persian Sky, who fairly scooted up the hill to land a touch in the ring at 4/1, Arizona came from third to pass ‘bay’ for second place.

The restricted trail and relying on someone to keep me  informed on the finish was told that the eventual winner Simply Rascal wasn’t there – well it was and it beat Flawless by a few lengths with the same margin to Mrs McGregor. The one that was in front finished fifth and the man with the ‘eyes’ ‘I missed the first three!.

The veterans and they have been around for a few years , therefore, it was no surprise that nobody recognised former Champ Dairy Diamond leading up the long finish to beat Tagget by five yards with the elder statesman ‘Freebie back in third. Could she win the veterans championship? .

Report.

Royal Ascot at Lamplugh and nobody dressed for the occasion..Oh! well on with trailing and ‘Arnie’ is making strides up the Championship table- into second place with a hard fought win over Celtic Malone ,who led on the downhill finish ,only to be passed in the final few yards by the odds on favourite, Quiet Linnet was back in third.

The junior trail and a one two for the Patterdale kennel when ‘Kracka’ held on to beat Jenny’s Delight with Thorn Dancer finishing tidily  passing table leader Daisy Dream to gain third place.

Now I have already reported that if you question a hounds willingness to win – It will win – and Trooper did it again-three in a week- Mind! he wont be winning any more short maidens!  Quite a few had a chance but Trooper stuck to his task for a narrow victory over High Stile.

In the Restricted Gerard started to shout for ‘Ty’ as soon as they showed ( makes a change to hear somebody wanting to win) and it paid off  as Cartier fairly shot down the hill only to be denied by a fast diminishing dog length. I’ve looked at the video and perhaps it was ‘Ty’ stopping that made it close.

It might be noted that although it is a long downhill finish most hounds are reluctant to ‘let themselves go’.

Also Ran:  Cracking Mover -Irish Pride -Time Traveller -Barncroft Return – Skyfall – The Script – Cool Return -Foxparke Homeward Bound -Hurry on – Hallelujah – So Be It – Vesta -Cracking Gold

Report.

We will start with the open maidens and the result.

The Judge’s original decision was made without the aid of the camera because the remote control ,which controls the frame by frame appliance had been misplaced.

It was found and on reviewing the finish it was decided to hold the decision until it could be viewed on a larger screen. When this decision was made everybody had left the field . In compliance with the rules; the Judge has five minutes in which he declares his intention to look at the camera at the end of the trail and to review his decision.

On a fresh evening eleven hounds went to post for the seniors and Meadow Dixie was made favourite but after being prominent early she finished a long last and was reported lame. The finish was fought out between two hounds that have a reputation for being runners-up. Well one of them had to win and it was Graham ( Cerci) Reid’s Tan Ted that got the better of Keystone.

In the pups the in form Persian Bay  won easily, after the last obstacle put paid to Silver Charms chances, Artist ran on for second and ‘Charm’  recovered to finish fifth.

Blueboy’ shortheaded’  Barton  in the maidens these two were comfortably in front of High Stile with the ticketing hounds close up.

Report:  Things happen in trailing, some are avoidable, some aren’t. Last night  the senior finishing end trailer got rather low, the hounds ,no problems. The pup trailer was informed and attempted to lay the same trail but with no guidance went higher up the fell. The consequence of this was that Huntsman’s Kracka  running the pup rag stole a march on her rivals who after running the senior rag  for a while re-routed themselves onto the pup rag only to scale and some hit the trail heel way and returned to the slip. This left ‘Kracka’ with an Unassailable lead, the other hounds finished in dribs and drabs. Unfortunate but at least you know what happened.

Back to the seniors and ‘Arnie’ is on top form ,he was always in contention and won handily from the fast finishing ladybird who pipped ‘Linnet’ on the line for second.

The final trail and these experienced hounds had no problems with the two trails. Mrs McGregor  ,with 50 yards to, go looked certain, but she began to ‘dance’ and threw away any chance of a win, letting veteran Da Look in for a popular win.

not sure if James was shouting?

Report. The first trail meeting at Ward Hall near to Gilcrux and Parsonby and the wind got up again and it became a rather cold evening.

Under the auspices of the Aspatria and Wigton  area committee or was it the Cockermouth and Workington area committee – actually it’s both, a joint venture and the chair lent a hand as they say ‘no show without punch’.

The seniors and a convincing victory for two to one shot Prudence over Willow Bay and the remaining ticketing hounds closely bunched,

The junior trail and after an early scale followed by another on the finish it was the joint favourites Persian Bay and Arizona that had a rare old tussle on the uphill finish. ‘Persian’ got the verdict by a half length, that was the Judges verdict , I had a look in the camera and she was spot on ( younger eyes).

The maidens and they run it a lot faster than the pups even though it wasn’t without its scales. I suppose as soon as you question a hounds willing to win . What does it do -WIN ! Trooper Thorn ,no stopping him now and, winning comfortably from Plan B. Just a mention for one who hasn’t had much success of late Cathy Lister who was highly delighted with Time Traveller who finished fourth.  ‘TARDIS’??

REPORT.

Is Thorn Dancer a fast finisher, will Trooper Thorn ever win, when Jim finally clips Lady what will she do, is Arizona championship material and Where’s Wallie? in front that’s where!.

That could sum up the Bitch Produce meeting at Kendal on Saturday.

The main event, and a turn of foot in the last ten meters carried the Kentmere hound  Thorn Dancer to a half a length victory over Persian Bay who had led up the long uphill finish through the gap in the wall ,courtesy of Stanley Jackson, and practically to the line.

Silver Charm just held on for third in front of Persian Sky with ‘Kracka’  and ‘Daisy’ close up.

The senior trail and ‘Arnie had the race won but a”call of nature’ at a vital stage left the way clear for Jim Batty’s Ladybird to record a popular win by a couple of yards with local Razzle Dazzle in third. Followers of this column will have noted that we have been waiting for ”Lady’ to be clipped and Jim to part with his pension in the bookies ring.

On to the maidens and I didn’t envisage saying Trooper Thorn ‘six points’. but he showed them the way home although tiring in the ‘straight’ he held on from an excellent run from ‘My Way’ with Titanium in third. Just before the hounds finished it was remarked ‘would trooper finish better as Darren was wearing a bright green shirt’ answer ‘yes!. Spare a thought for an exhausted Lady Helen who was two yards short of a ticket when she sat down and apparently she had showed in front on the ‘whistle’

The open pups and here Arizona went to the top of the Championship with a resounding victory, probably helped by a pup out of the previous trail giving him something to chase. He missed the gap but had plenty to spare over The Script and Persian Gold.

And the final race of the afternoon went to Where’s Wallie who led all the way up the finish and kept on stoutly to hold off the determined challenge of ,yet another Dearham hound, Barton with Quiet Linnet in third.

Well done to Russell and Wendy and thanks to Wendy and her helpers who manned the gate at short notice. The trailers Russ, Graham, Joe, Lee and Chris

the scouts Peter ,Donald ,John, Ian, Mike ,Lee ,Alex and Robert.

John and all the catchers ,Kirsty for the raffle, Norma for the entries and if I’ve missed somebody thanks anyway.

PS > for sale, only used once, PA system,

Sorry for the impression of Norman Collier but there was a loose wire which will be rectified because it wont fit where somebody told me to stick it.

Just another fact at the preview there was 153 runners – at the premier event 101 runners! The preview was more profitable than the main event ! Observations?

Report.

Despite the new water main, that has disrupted the trailing venues from Ennerdale to Egremont,  St Helena went ahead with a shortened finish ,which caused a slight problem as the first two hounds avoided their owners ,ignored the bait tins , jumped the gate, avoided various pieces of equipment and disappeared up the old finish.

Try Again and Celtic Malone were the two culprits –  they finished clear of Serenity and Sental whose owners ‘twoed’ -up to catch them.

Try Again led from start to finish and Galemire Grace who was in third position suffered a setback and found her way back to the field. Latest report says she’s fine but will be on the easy list for a while.

The pups and for the third time this  week a pup maiden lost its status. This time it was Try Time who held on to a length victory over Daisy Dream with Stroll On a distant third.

In the last a four hound finish which any of them could have won ,in the end it was Ian Fleet’s High Stile that got the better of Midnight Show with a ‘fully clothed ‘Free Spirit in third.

Report.. Lightning strikes at Dean.

On a fine ,warm night only six seniors faced the starter and one of those succumbed to the fast going and pulled up after half way. The weather suited ‘Dixie’ and at a generous 4/1 she beat ‘Ted’ and Endure.

In the junior trail and ,once again showing a liking for the course, Irene and Arthur Temple’s Dairy Lightning notched the first win of the season and became the second pup this week to loose it’s maiden tag. Lightning eased up but  had enough lead to beat the joint favourites.

Willow Bay held off the challenge of Barton in the maidens and the consistent Trooper got another three points

Now the last trail and again ‘silent night’. It was a good race  to the line and in the silence of the night ,just the odd ‘hey lass’, that was probable the sixth.

The other five ,what can you say ,hounds were being patted and fussed over because they didn’t win and Quiet Linnet ,she was favourite so she duly obliged whether she was wanted or not.

Time for a look at the Restricted format , perhaps!

7th Valhalla.

Report.  At last the wind had dropped for our first visit of the season to Goosewell farm hidden behind Castlerigg stone circle.

The seniors- and, when they showed on the downhill section of the finish,  the favourite Debra looked all over the winner but she disappeared into the gully and came out third behind the two kennel mates called ‘Jenny’. It was ‘Choice who gained the spoils with a fast diminishing five lengths over ‘Huntsmans’. A fillip for the Patterdale kennel after a harrowing week.

The pup finish was a cracker with the majority of the field in contention up the hard uphill finish. And it was John Loan’s maiden Lone Rebel ( another red’un) that led and finished well to hold off the determined challenge of Huntsman’s Kraka with the ‘ticketers’ close behind.

Phil Graham is having a ‘purple patch’ and once again ‘Toby’ aka Jimmy Choo showed a clean pair of shoes (heels) to his rivals. MInd ,it’s a good job Cartier wasn’t any nearer on the finish,he ‘flew’ up the hill to take second from ‘the force’

Only seven veterans ran and the even money favourite Cinnabar  duly obliged . The eight year old won comfortably from Thorn Girl and Da Look

Glossary; Fillip – what John Crone wants.!

Report.

Another windy day , fine but on the chilly side for Sunday afternoons  fare from Dean. Only 33 runners for the four trails but that didn’t detract from the afternoons sport and the punters were happy as the results went their way.

In the seniors and once again ‘Arnie’ from Stockdale farm ,hidden between Bassenthwaite and Uldale, scored again, his third win in just over a week, beating the consistent Tan Ted comfortably.

The senior maidens and for the second time this week Phil Graham , the Cockermouth area Chair, was having to tip the trailers, as Flash Dance( formerly Silver Wings) held off the challenge of former kennelmate Trooper Thorn (five points) to win by half a length with another kennelmate Barton in third .

In the Puppy trail Norman and Lynn Brown’s Barrow hound Persian Bay  kept up her challenge for the title with a facile win over the two ‘black ‘uns. Ben 10 and Dairy Lightning.

The pup maidens field was reduced from six to four when two hounds returned to the start and Billy Birkett ‘s Brigham hound Billy Bowe had a keen battle up the long finish with Dearhams Delta Dawn ,he held on to win by a length.

What makes trailing- well Jeanette had three runners -two lasts and one next to last and she was still smiling – her turn will come.

Goosewell tomorrow- prize for the first person to come up with a plausible idea as to how it got its name.

SATURDAY ROUND UP.

The top two juniors both won their respective trails and by about the same margin but the feature of the Coniston trails is that for the second week running identical times have been recorded for two trails at the same meeting. The open maidens and open restricted and the pups and open restricted and only three seconds between them from one week to the next.

At Lazonby Meadow Dixie scored a narrow victory from ‘Razzle’ with ‘Sam’ a close third.

Lone Rebel and The Script finished wide apart but the Keswick hound finished the faster to beat the favourite. The next two trails provided close finishes and the camera was put to good use as well as the camera used for filming for Channel 5 featuring Penelope Keith-Ian Telford -Margaret Baxter-Hamish Rose-Uncle Tom Cobbly  and all.

The seniors at Coniston, under time last week; slipped further back and with the absence of a couple of driving hounds, had plenty to spare -all 42 seconds .Galemire a three length winner from the Troutbeck duo and one hirsute Ladybird in fourth ( watch out) . Jimmy Batty lives in the ‘backwater ‘ of Millom and with neither phone or lap top wont know about this -will HE?

The last two trails went to the favourites and in form hounds Yogi Bear and Jazz Singer ( Cleo Laine plays Jellystone Park}

Now-  the weather- has anybody got an answer to the bloody wind. Windeeze will not suffice.!

PS- Is there any truth in the rumour that a black ‘bus’ containing three characters stayed behind for the rave on Coniston Tops . Let me know under the heading ‘Daisy- Daisy  give me your answer -do!
