Report, typical Grasmere weather , wet with low cloud. you could just about see the hounds in action but it was a brave man who identified them. Was it going to be one of those nights , as I put the tape out of the car door , followed it and landed in a heap betwixt two loads of cows—– stayed put and watched ! At the moment there’s no ‘stopping Denise Bland , another double, three wins for “Aura”., who held onto a slender lead over kennelmate “major” and “Oracle who came from behind to beat Huntsman, the last race was a “nip and tuck” affair with Bedazzled  short heading  Eden raine

Report. . The first in a series of trails at Ward Hall ( a cluster of houses between Gilcrux and Parsonby),

A competitive senior trail and a first win of the season for the Barrow hound Persian Bay, the former puppy champion had a tussle up the long uphill finish with in-form Crazy,and Liz, the consistent Rover, the only “fly in the ointment ” was the sixth hound ,what was it doing there.

The puppy trail and Acorn got the better of Sam from Kinniside , note Sam ( dog ) not Limber (bitch) specsavers , No! a genuine mistake – Donner und Blitzen- LOL.

And  in the  last trail Billy just lasted home to beat Artemis. Highlight of this finish was the speed of which  Russel Dawson reached chasing after Adele, once more she ran off in search of greener pastures., Wendy could be next LOL.

Thanks to the Aspatria and Wigton  area of the HTA under the leadership of Andy Horn, a special thank you to Margaret the gatekeeper, working on her own ,seemingly miles away. the trailers kipper , John, Ashley etc, the road scouts, our secretary Phil, who is never still ! The timekeeper, who’s  definition of trail time ,varied between 15 and 18 minutes, Autumn excitement ? perhaps and the raffle ticket seller , a fresh vocation for Steve?

The trails – the premier event of the day, the Bitch produce , was won in emphatic style by the glenridding  based Jenny’s Oracle, sired by former champion  Endure out of former puppy champion Song Bird ( renamed Mysterious),she finished well clear of Carlisle based huntsman’s orchid with Opal back in third.. The disappointment of the race was the total eclipse of table leaders Limber and Acorn and a pointer to the dog produce , could it be the siblings turn , Huntsman’-Blue blaze or Shotgun.

The day got underway with the seniors, where the  favourite Liz , reported to be near last than first, but she showed second on the flat part of the finish and then drew clear on the uphill section , to win readily from last seasons two champions , Jenny’s Aura and Huntsman’s Nimrod.

The maidens and coming onto the finish it seemed that last season’s non-winner champ Copperfield had  the race at his mercy before spotting a red’un which had a lead of 50 yards, under the radar was Westgate autumn who justified her support in the ring.

The open pup trail was won by Overwater Sully in close run race with Huntsman, Blue blaze and Reebok.

The restricted trail and with Rover ,who seemed to have the race won, slowing down in the dying strides and allowing Mine to win, Rover was second and the ticketing hounds were close behind.

The final event , in what was a pleasant day’s trailing , the ” oldtimers ” was a 20 meter win for Thorn Fire, who’s connections had just returned from holiday, perhaps therein lies a clue, Huntsman’s Jenny was second completing a successful afternoon for the Huntsman’s-jenny combination.

report. Former Champion Jenny’s Aura won by the proverbial mile and is now set to defend her title . Winning at Kirkstone is no surprise for “aura” she won all three senior trails in 2017 and 2018, when she retires she can pull the rag

The puppy trail was won by Huntsman , nothing else just huntsman , despite finishing behind the judge he had enough lead over orchid to be judged. in the gathering gloom the maidens were lead in by Summer moon, a welcome visit to the winners enclosure for Willy and Craig Mark.

Report. The first trails at Buttermere 2019 and the old adage , ” If you can see the hounds for most of the trail then the hounds can equally see as much. ” this leads to , if you are behind and you want to catch up then the quickest way from A to B is “no  corners “. It is an excellent trail marred by the odd incident and you can’t blame a hound for not going on the scenic route , the onus is on the owner , run somewhere else and if you have trouble identifying the hounds then you can borrow caroline’s bins, the names are on the lens

Rant over and in the seniors Crazy had only the watch for opposition and won by 23 seconds. Further behind was Babylon and Huntsman’s Novice, two of last seasons pups and having their first outing  on the senior trail.

The juniors and confirming form shown in the winter trials at Buttermere was Huntsmans who beat Muse and Dash, a field of 18 consisting of 13 non- winners. What won the maidens , “Mine did “! ” No it wasn’t yours it was mine”No it was both of them, last  seasons Champion non – winner, Copperfield  and   Mine , a dead -heat.

The restricted trail(s) and if Arizona could speak his statement would have been  ” There was never more than six hounds in front of me at any one time, but I finished twelfth.

Report.   A splendid day at the trails courtesy of the  Cockermouth / Workington area of the H TA. .

The seniors and could Red Will  continue his winning form and inflict another defeat on  championship contender LIz, Freshly clipped the answer – NO! couldn’t even get a ticket, well! that’s hound trailing , in the same light Limber winner of 13 trails ,ran over a minute slower than the puppy maidens now there’s’ something to make your mouth water Opal ( fruits)_. back to the seniors -on the long . uneven finish the even-money liz  romped away from the opposition and improving leaps and bounds it is no mystery who finished second just un front of Silver Dusk and Rover.

Escape passed and held on to beat ” Billy “and finishing fast in third was Foxparke Just Got It , whose intrepid trainer is looking forward to a nice relaxing break in Appleby..

The restricted trail could have been won by the veteran’s favourite customer but he couldn’t catch the miterdale Copper in the fastest time of the day..

Back to the races and in the seniors, Rover came to challenge wild Gypsy in the final few yards but failed to go through with his challenge, it was alleged that Wild gypsy had growled and leant on Rover the outcome led to the disqualification of the hound from first place.

in the pups it was a two dog affair , Reebok came to the final , downhill stretch with a ten yard  lead only to see it whittled away and was overtaken in the last few strides by limber , who then eased giving Reebok another chance, but she failed by a head.

Onceover -it was a regular sight seeing Victor Brownlee catching winners, 12 championships  and in the twilight of his hound trailing career he can still bend his back to put the bait tin down , aiding his daughter Christine and finishing  like a whirlwind was Monsoon, a non-goer as a pup but with patience has taken an interest and perhaps better times ahead –  second was Zulu  owned by another “oldtimer”

Mally Reay and his wife Anne, diplomacy he is an oldtimer Anne isn’t..  went home before they released the beast.
