December meeting of the HTA area committees.

Meeting held at Keswick Sunday 3rd  December 2017.

It was recommended to the members that honorary membership be given to Maurice and Kate Tunstall and Victor and Tant Inman.

Also recommended was that all fixtures , times and dates and class of trails are advertised in the fixture list at least 28 days in advance.

Also the number of areas was discussed with the idea of reducing them, This was also in the hands of the Committee and would be discussed at the next meeting.

15 members were present.

Area funds stand at £753.00

65 members  18 kennels and 12 trail meetings..

Notice of motion which in contrast to Keswick was passed- that – Hounds and puppies may only be allowed to win One maiden trail and one open maiden in a season.

Discussion followed on several topics plus on whether it was practical to join forces with the Ulverston area\ , this was inconclusive as was the reduction in the number of areas .

The mixture was aired and considering the area had a number of ‘ one off trails which were run extremely well , it was considered that paraffin and aniseed and oil when necessary was adequate.

ASPATRIA AND WIGTON.

Due to the inclement weather only a small fraction of the membership were present .The rest to follow ————–

Paraffin for sale at £1.30p litre apply the Chairman 015394-45200.

Paraffin for sale at £1.30p per litre ring 015394-45200.

And now a tale of the man who trained his puppy to run every combination of mixture possible– Aniseed- Paraffin- and Kerosene, diesel. petrol, red diesel, tvo, urine. uncle Tom cobbley and all and his pup ran every combination without an hitch until one day he forgot to add aniseed and guess what- it refused to go.

The moral of the story is whatever you use it’s the aniseed that matters, and the rule of hound trailing is that the mixture used is best paraffin- aniseed and oil when necessary well perhaps necessary is everytime and the bring back kerosene brigade, keep some kerosene in an open container in your car overnight and see how far you drive the following day. and if you still think that it’s the answer to bad trails then I suggest that you ask the members for support at the AGM in Feb.

Message from the treasurer.

Blogged down at Redmain.

Dropped Caroline off about a mile from Cockley Beck trail field to walk the pups.Gate was locked next to cattle grid so she had a problem walking across it – and who’s fault was it – mine! Why ?  because I didn’t tell her about the gate being locked next to the cattle grid.

Then we had to reverse down a lane I was behind shouting “left-hand down- Ken Routledge was in front shouting “right -hand down “and grand daughter was in the car shouting “left – right left- right”

Moral of the story – Don’t trust a midden  because underneath, what looks like a firm surface, lies liquid- liquid poo! and if you want confirmation of this then ask Evie Moore.

Poor” Routs” first his car gets a muck shower then the mist came down on Cold Fell and he got lost, well  not really lost but not where he should have been which technically can be described as lost but trailers tend to say “got wrong!

As you have gathered I’ve got a new car,4+4 got stuck at Redmain, had trouble at Kirkstone and because the number plate is different  nobody recognized me on the way to Cold Fell.Travelled on thinking something must be wrong but nobody “flashed me ”

Stood on the main road outside the Grasmere  sports field when I had to shout to a fellow trailer ,”have you got any glasses” reply from a passing motorist, holding up a glasses case, here you are Baz.– former neighbour going to work !

Having a slight problem walking at Cockley Beck ,my 4 year old grand- daughter noticed ,ran to the car and brought me my stick. She’s going places!

Questions answered.

Questions >

The aniseed used now doesn’t freeze.

Answer ; aniseed freezes below 15′ C or 59′ F

Put it in the fridge!

Why did we change the mixture>

In 1972 the mixture was : hounds – two Quarts.

pups   –  six gills

2 fluid ozs of aniseed- 1/2 oz of turpentine , 74 ozs of best paraffin

Heavy Oil to be added when necessary.

In 1979 2 1/2 ozs of aniseed, 3 1/2 ozs of S A E oil and 134 ozs of best paraffin.

1985: The total mixture for a hound trail and a puppy trail shall be 7 pints = Aniseed 3 1/2 fluid ozs.

Best Paraffin 136 1/2 fluid ozs

When necessary 3 1/2 flid ozs of best engine oil to be added replacing same amount of paraffin.

It shall be divided 4 pints for seniors and 3 pints for juniors

7 pints= 4 litres.

3 1/2 fluid  ozs = 100 mls.

It has not altered since, contrary to the misguided. Therefore the answer to the question is WE HAVEN’T changed the mixture.

Why don’t I smell after laying a trail ?

Because of the development in the field of cosmetics.

Everybody is now using the same paraffin, the same aniseed,

rags steeped in official mixture, therefore allowing for atmospherics in an ideal world all trails should have the same outcome but take into account “Sod’s Law”

.

Chairman’s view .

The Chairmans view on current aspects of why the hounds are having problems .

Firstly- it is impossible to decipher exactly what is causing ” bad trails”. All we can do is to make sure that the correct procedure for trailing is adhered to.

If anybody wants to argue that  the current mixture used is to blame for the problem should have come to Ings , this is one of the most difficult trails ,especially the puppy trail and they acquitted themselves well.

The mixture – Aniseed from De Monchy , which has just been given a certificate of analysis, the only thing that might be of consequence is that aniseed should be stored in a COOL -DARK place.

Paraffin supplied as same as the other 6 areas.

Oil – 300 mls of engine oil added as per rule.

Woollen rags kept in qualified steep, drip – dried on the day.

Mixture made as in Rule 70.

Another blog from Baz.

Not about Hound Trailing but involves hound trailers. Having purchased £10’s worth of prawns fresh from the Irish Sea and placing them on the sink, apparently still alive and waiting for the pot to boil- this happened!

“Mam that bag moved ”

” Yep, but it wont be in a minute when this waters boiled”

Mother turns her back and daughter half inches the prawns and is away on her toes in the direction of their homeland. She returns the prawns to the sea and all live happy ever after!  that includes the Turkey’s and the lobster.

Batty’s in the fray again – this time he wants smoking banning on the trail field- saying this he was stood behind the only cigar smoker- cousin Brown who choked on his smoke when he heard the gripe but turned to laughter when somebody said ” Aye and we should ban moaning and groaning ”

Ambleside sports and according to my sources the ladies queuing for the toilet had a cock-eyed view of the men’s urinal.

Mike Moorhead was in full voice when Alfie aka Yorkshire Lad came in second place in the maidens, little did he know that as he shouted is hound home the one in front also responded to Alfie and came home in first place.

Parked on Scale Hill near Loweswater, in anticipation of some hounds crossing the road, opened the boot to get a red flag only to find a recently acquired industrial toilet roll precariously balanced in the rear of the car. Freed from its restraint it tumbled and rolled down the hill towards the car park ,which it entered at a rate of knots just in front of a startled motorist followed by Laal Pat trying to retrieve it.

Welcome to hound trailing when Mel Dooley’s Cuchulainn , after holding every chance in the puppy trail , decided to do his own version of the Rydal round. Its not the first time that the hounds have made a mess of the Ambleside finish. Back in the early seventies , Mel’s Grandad hid behind the tree on the left of the finish after moving people aside, only to find the leading pup run towards him putting himself out of contention – the pups name Sherwin and the trainer  Uncle Baz.

Addition to Rule 54.5 .

Addition to Rule 54.5 ( to be qualified at the AGM )

Agricultural , Horticultural  and Shows that include hounds from local packs may charge full admission but entries must be free.

by order of the Committee.

Another load of Waffle from BAZ.

Kirkstone pass overlooks Ambleside and so does Wansfell, now on Wednesday night the fells namesake was trying his best to keep pace with well, all of them that were running in the seniors, and having got to halfway he took one look at the uphill climb to the summit and declared change my name back to Boston -at least its flat.

I had Little Messy winning three out of four at Helton , there has only been three meets,  answer – It will win the next one at Helton.

Four wise men sheltering from the rain ,names- Dave, Les, Tony, and  Et Moi. Sweets came out ,Which one said “No thanks” I am allergic to Nuts and who said “there’s four here”

Haven’t mentioned the driving  lately .

Susan Glaister went around the  roundabout at Penrith last week twice ,so not  to be outdone, her indoors decided she liked the view at Cockermouth on Thursday and tootled around in similar fashion from now  they will be known as Zebedee and Ermintrude.

Quote of the week after failing to catch Marlou at Kirkstone , Victor Brownlee said ” The catchers moved forward and the hound couldn’t see me ”

Foixparke Saucy Nancy , it is on the cards that next season Foxparke Worzel Gummidge- Foxparke  Barbara Windsor.

Nap Hand is five – four winners is lucky- don’t play cards with me

Cuchulainn finally got his head in front and what does it mean in Irish. One of the visiting Irish lads told me what it meant and what he should call his next years pup. He is known as the Hound of Ulster , his mother is Deichtine ,sister of Conchobar Mac Nessa (Simpson). Next Season SETANTA., ( bookies and entry clerks can spell that).

Remember the other week when it was reported that a binocular lens had been found and it was in the possession of the secretary.

The finder of the part was “Big John” timekeeper and general ” whatever”and the person who lost the part none other than “Big John”. You couldn’t make it up !!!
