Who fancies being a tv star ( television) .

A Manchester based television company is looking for hound trailers

That is an established trainer, an upcoming trainer, a breeder . trail layer, a follower  etc.

If possible willing to be interviewed on the weekend March 2nd and 3rd.

Now is your chance of promoting your sport and at the same time become an overnight star on the box.

1999 Hound trailing season ( Brexit ? Que?)

The season 1999.

And John Coughlan was the Hound trailing correspondent for the Whitehaven News

a forum was to be held at Wath Brow legion on Mar 20th and on the panel are Bill Farrell- Victor Brownlee- Ian Hunter  – Birkett Lawson – Tom Newall an all round representation of Hound Trailing.

The season got underway at Longsleddale and Kirkbride, the winners were Mischief -Fidelity and Golden Dawn at longsleddale and Kirkbride , Ginger Nut – Mickey Finn – Isitours.

Watch out for the three evils, a message from our Chairman Roy Laidler- Winning at all costs – Looking after number one – taking but not giving these are stopping our sport progressing according to the chair,” it’s nice to win but it’s not everything”.

The International, Bitch and Dog Produce dates  are set in stone but where at nobody knows ?

John ‘s tipping on the opening day were no better than Newsman’s, he had a non-runner .a third .and a also ran.

The debut fixture for  Lazonby fell  was a bit of a disaster as the hot weather took it’s toll and the pup trail was declared void overtime.

Meanwhile at Borrowdale, Former Champion Miracle now in it’s third year as a veteran , unclipped made short work of the restricted trail running faster than the pups, it was said  ” There is no substitute for class ” or as one might think  there is no substitute for knowledge

At Kirkbride the promoter was charging OAP’s the full price, our scribe came down on the side of the aged and asked the promoter to see common sense and charge them accordingly. After a few weeks Huntsman’s Choice111 and Martine led the championships and they did throughout the season to become Champions of 1999.

Brian Lister aka Cheesy thanked everybody that helped him look for his hound Keegan  and the ladies who made tea and sandwiches

Geoff and Gillian Higgins took on the Irish in the Guinness Irish puppy International at Ballinagree and came away with first ticket with Sarah’s Dream , Mason won the seniors (not the bookie) but Christy and Marie Keating’s Kinniside Pride- Hotspot bred Irish champion.

Our correspondent ‘s tipping prowess is far superior to Newsman’s the difference being Newsman tips were printed before the race , Johns were announced as “another fancy of mine” after the result was known. And another win for the “singing hound ” Elvis owned by Alvin Finch and Mike Stewart of Kendal, you ain’t nothing but a hound dog  resonates around the pubs on a winning night.

And now a hoaxer as a phone call to the Whitehaven changing the time of Gamblesby trails proved to be a hoax, according to tish Graham , the promoter, very few were led astray one being a bookmaker from Ambleside.

It is common knowledge that bookmaker Mike Allen has been complaining about the lack of money bet at lowside trails , then at Sawrey one punter had £500 to win £250 on Martine with said Bookmaker who then tried to lay off £350, funny old game.

The first three weeks of the season have been exciting for some trainers but none more  so than the Crosby family of Whitehaven whose puppy Fidelity put in another blistering performance at Bower House on Saturday.

It came home alone well clear of Late Edition and Sunny Delight  to raise her sixth win of the season.

Geoff and Gillian Higgins are also having a good season and Chardonnay added to that with her second win of the season.  Other winners at the weekend were Colin and Brian Graham’s Assignment, Wendy martin’s Martine, Martin Burrow’s and Lyn Pawley’s Disco Star and Discovery owned by the grand old lady from Cartmel, Mrs Oldcorn  And a treble for the McCarron family as Engage , Encourage and Kingswood won.

The first major meet of the season , May day at Grange- In – Borrowdale, the winners were Kendal hounds  Tribute ,and Gentle Harmony both from the Teasdale kennel, Martine, Stolen Gem and Crackshot .

When you make a round trip of over 200 miles for a midweek trail then you must fancy your chances and that was the case with Alwyn O’ Neill from Fieldhouse in West Lothian her hound Glayva won the open maidens at Arlecdon.

The dog produce was held on Torver Tops, the winners were Crafty- Scully- Dean – Sara’s Dream-Lady Helena.

Dean beat his sibling Master Milan by a length, all the way from Stranraer to be beaten by so little,, Peter ( Pal) Chambers praised his helpers , Mike Baker- Brian Hodgson and Des ” Jumbo” Dawson ( a motley crew if ever I saw one)

Bill Mellon of Appleby is a superb sportsman and each week he travels miles to run his hounds. He was rewarded for his dedication when Cracking Performance lost its non – winners tag when finishing well to beat Robert Reid\’s Sparrowmire Sam.

The International was  held at Redmain nr Cockermouth , the winners were Chardonnay and Max , maidens-Lucky Legend-Courtney- Master Milan and Owt Good in the restricted event. A lot of supporters were unhappy with the overall standard  of the trails and a number of border members felt that the terrain was used too many times prior to this meeting confusing the hounds .

Last Saturday Geoff Irving and the Cockermouth Area did their level best to ensure a good day’s sport was enjoyed by all. Alas the weather was against them and also Tony Irving ran all of the trails and instead of criticizing perhaps we could give a lot of credit to Tony for his dedication.

The bitch produce , and under the guidance of Dickie Smithson all roads lead to Sandale. The bitch produce was won in convincing style by Sarah’s Dream, Geoff Higgins ,in cloud- cuckoo land said after the win  ” Dedicating the win to his late father Jack who would have been in his element if he had witnessed this.  There is a photo of a beaming Geoff holding the trophy and under in bold print , winner of the Bitch puppy maidens – Sarah’s Dream.

Abba won the seniors , maidens was Belladonna and together with Talisker gained a notable double for the Thompson family of Lindale, the Swanton’s Lunesdale Reflection won the last.

The Cock-How festival and a day to remember for the Jacksons’ of Rosthwaite in the Borrowdale valley, when they had four winners and a second- Courtney- Crafty- Westend Lady- Eternal. with Christy finishing second to Master Milan, in the words of one of the Irish visitors ” This is the best meeting I have attended in Cumbria.

change of name

To comply with H T A rules and subject to area committees approval.

Fearless ( Hunter’s Dale- Thorn Fire) owned by N .Wilson is now

Fearlass.

1984. Hound Trailing and George Orwell.

The 1984 season got underway with trails at Gawthwaite and Oulton, the winners were Victoria Lad and Stealaway , Ragman and Myra respectively.

McEwans are again sponsoring the May day trails and Bass Charington, Jennings and Matthew Brown will continue their support.   BNFL were once again sponsoring the  Whitehaven  Area to the sum of £200 +.

The International trails will be held at Greenhead in the borders, the bitch produce is in the Whitehaven area and Carlisle and Penrith will host the Dog produce.

Five Yorkshire hounds which have been in an age dispute will now be allowed to run in senior trails ,the hounds were named- Exile,  The Gambler,McKenna,By Rite and Silverdale.

The Blawith hound reigning champ River Glen had made his customary slow start to the season and in the words of our intrepid reporter,” Ronnie and Dot wont be worried ” but with the benefit of hindsight he was only to win six by the end of August

And on Saturday “The Vicar ” ( not allowed to run Sundays) went to  the top of the table , so called because he had a dog collar.

Melvin Crawford ‘s Brigsteer kennel had a treble on  Saturday, and doubles through the week with  Battleaxe – Bright Prospect and Anniversary., and he is still! talking about it .Six weeks into the season and Victoria Lad – Ardoony – Ragman head the seniors and Lady Tina – Bridleway – Bright Prospect the juniors. by the way The International trail is not at Greenhead but Rogersceugh, sound similar don’t they ?

The entries for the international are in , there are 421 compared to 512 last season.,  comprising of 41 pups 119 seniors 129 senior maidens 54 bitch pup maidens and 76 dog pup maidens of these 77 border and 3 Irish.

Forecasting winners at the big trails is an hazardous occupation, yes, but at the international he tipped Lingla Lady to win the open pups the other winners were Tsunami – Bob Job- Above Board – Sally.

Ronnie Carr, one of the most successful owners in the Borders did a good job in organising the meeting and the prizes were presented by Paul  Nicholson of Vaux breweries.,

A  William Hartley of The Knoll Thornhill writes on the merits of former hounds , he says Blencathra was one of the fastest hounds , Smoker was one of the fastest pups and the daddy of them all Perivale.

Fell View a prolific winner of 122 trails notched her first victory in 24 months when winning the senior trail at Crag farm backed down to favourite she beat Braehead lass and Dulwich

And winning the restricted trail at Torver , Ice  Cracker landed a touch for the Laidlers according to “Newsman” our lad must have had ten bob on .

The Dog Produce at Fellside was won by Roy and Avril Brockbank’s Random patch, Forward  was second and Jennings Lad third. Outsider Barton Solo won the seniors and the other winners were Cannonore, Dawn Chorus and Rambling Jack, Newsman tipped five losers, no change there.

Entries were well down last weekend the prolonged dry spell was to blame ( and they tell me ” we can train in any weather ” )

Helton promoters created a somewhat record on Saturday when they had only two entries for the pup trail, Roy Laidler’s Black Velvet finished alone has her opponent failed to finish , Sugarpot , now who does that belong to?

Fast approaching August and  leading the Championship are Largesse and Bridleway.

The Premier trails were held at Wythop and our intrepid reporter once more waded in with both feet and tipped five losers in hindsight his money should have been on Landlord- Penny Double – Bright Prospect – Mac’s Lady – Boney M.  Matthew Brown forgot to apply for a licence and therefore all drink was free. Some people didn’t know what had won until Monday.

Beetham sports and a void trail, undertime  in the seniors, once more around somebodies garden is what was needed. Fireball was the culprit

Veteran official David Harrison described Monday’s conditions as the worst ever. The swirling wind nearly lifted his car and the puppy trailer was long overdue ,they nearly called out the mountain rescue.

The senior trail at Buttermere had been run and Barton Solo had won in 44 mins and 50 secs.

And first on the agenda at the Westmorland area AGM,was a proposal by Barry Laidler to allow restricted hounds four wins per season before they are debarred.

A wet and windy end to the season with largesse and Bridleway Champions.

82 puppies registered for the season 2019. 44 bitches and 38 dogs A quick assessment and a not so bright one ,.

James Irving and family have Seven Overwaters’  and have outnumbered the foxparkes by one. In the Red corner wearing purple in the blue corner wearing ?

The pups are well forward and although there will be some that haven’t appeared in public , of those that have the Eden Rossi- Eden Rosa litter are outnumbering their opponents with Reg Smith’s well to the fore at Lorton where the time at around six minutes is up to par with previous pups. Others showing promise include Prospect Spring , Tremor, and Trinket and Huntsman’s from Patterdale are well forward.

Buttermere didn’t give many clues last week as for the first time many pups ” travelled ” those who caught the eye were Eden Raya and a white ‘un from Patterdale.

Rookie of the year 2018.

Rookie ( a starter, beginner,of little experience ) of the year 2018, but in the words of Joe Cocker , “with a little help from my friends” came Caroline Clough.

Her two pups ” Best Mate ” and “Copperfield” together with her partners  Arizona made it an eventful season.

Blaze aka Best Mate had 16 wins, including the dog Produce , International puppy trail, Helton May Day and came a close second to his brother’s Cuckoo Lane in the Premier meeting at Sandal.

Copperfield ” Brook ” also known as  ” Nob ‘ ed”  just had the one success a three runner event but nevertheless always gave his best and Arizona won twice before taking his pads off all four feet and this practically brought the curtain down on his 2018 campaign.

Prize- Money was £5 short of £1000 and finishing third in the Championship and winning the Open Non Winners points competition.

A Champion NON WINNER , points winner perhaps but a champion?

Now we look forward to the 2019 season hoping that Arizona recovers from a lung infection ( something growing inside) and whether the young’uns mature and take to the senior trails.

Coming soon to while away those winter blues, stories present and past.

Extracts from the Whitehaven news for the 1979 season, courtesy of Newsman aka Terry Harrison. And a new rule book was published and in the editor’s words would be much sought after.

With that in mind we embark on the 1979 season which saw 107 hounds running in two trails at Eskdale and first in the pup trail was Oak Vale, locally trained by Sandy Crowe.

And over in Yorkshire , the Longshaw sheep dog trials were willing to pay appearance money and all expenses and prize money of £100 .

The first major event of the season , the May Day trails at Borrowdale attracted 163 hounds and the four winners were – Mctavern- Miss Victor-Boney M – Legacy. The next major trail was the International trail at Ainstable in the borders and the editor tipped, lofty – Martini -lisa – MMM- Crown Lady and the winners were Tempest- Nora Dora -Cavalier – Swift Velvet – Mercury, .

lofty’s chance was ruined when the leading hounds put up a hare on the finish and couldn’t resist the temptation of chasing it  and a tale to tell  or lack of one as the winner Tempest has the shortest tail of any trailhound.

It wasn’t long before Controversary arose when the Judge ignored the first two hounds in the puppy trail  because they finished behind him , Nora Dora beating Woodside, after a stewards inquiry  the original result  was amended and Sue Helen was given third and Nora Dora the winner.

In the senior maidens , and a cavalry charge plus the catchers running in caused a problem with the placed hounds. Eventually  the verdict went to Norman Charlton’s Cavalier followed by 98 others.

The strong west cumbrian hound trail followers face a long journey on Saturday when the Dog Produce event will be held at Cunswick  nr Kendal.and  the tips for the dog Produce Rambling Jack – lofty – Ravenscar – Martini and the winners were Penny Dale- Steamer- Wellaway- Nora Dora.

You’ve probably noticed I keep publicising Newsman’s tips – it’s because I was his bookie.

In the sultry conditions many hounds found the limestone running very exhausting and the uphill finish punishing ( It still is )

Rambling Jack was made favourite in he dog produce but was unplaced behind Penny Dale who just beat Revenge with Penny Black in third.

surprise of the day was the defeat of lofty in the senior trail which went to Langdale hound Steamer who beat the unlucky Matahari. ( Surprise was the editors choice of words , hard trail + Dog Hound+ editors tip ) no surprise to the bookies.

And to confirm matters the senior maiden winner Wellaway ran the trail 15 seconds faster ( a bitch trained on limestone)

The big question was “would Martini be in the right mood, she had “comeback” in her last  three trails. She was made favourite and once more the curse of the editor’s tip as she was passed on the run in by Nora Dora with Legacy a close third.

Following a Whitehaven area meeting on Friday, after a complaint by members , lt was decided to ask the executive to change the mixture to what they had previously used.( That was 40 years ago and they are still debating.)

And in the adverts: Aspatria and Wigton TAKE  NOTICE persons holding trial trails over Lawrenceholme and Wedham Hill Oulton without permission will be severely dealt with.( 40 years on and they are still “At Large”)

Our intrepid reporter forecast that Fell View would win the senior title, then what happened , she went to Cleator Moor sports , where she had won four times this season, only to finish some eight minutes behind the leader, and now with a quick change of hat ,our reporter , the Whitehaven area chair ,no less, issued a stern warning , that anybody  committing an illegal act would be severely dealt with.

Three hounds are level at the top of the senior championship, Lofty – Ardoon and Fell View with Leap Year just behind and reigning Champion Limbo Dancer in touch as the season enters August.

The Premier trails were held at Fellside the winners were : – Fell View- Montana-Nora Dora – Fellwyn. That was Nora Dora’s third win in the major events.

The International trails held at lyre , county Cork were dominated by HTA hounds . The seniors were won in a  rather controversial  manner by Bright Lady , who was an intended runner in the maidens but was switched to the seniors where she beat

Tartan Raider and in the maidens , former H T A  hound Darkie won and in the pups Legacy bt Rose Marie.

The Windermere owned hound Dreamer went second in the puppy championship, trained by “Billy Mac ” it is owned by first timers in the sport, joiners Chapman and Todd and plumber Peter Edgar and they have backed at 1,000/ 1 for the title. Entering the last month of the season Dreamer was on 18 with Martini, Sue Ellen , BIrkby Lass on 15, Nora Dora 14 , Croasdale and Legacy 13 and on 12 Tramore ,who was a maiden at the end of August. I mention this because  I was the one who had taken £3 win at 1000/1 and was looking for a get out clause..

The final HTA event of the season , the October trails at Sandale were a let-down. 21 runners beat the flag in  the pups and hounds had trouble hunting, Leap Year ran part of the senior trail with its jacket on . The winners were Dana- Nimrod – Woodside- Rodney Lad.

At Wasdale Show Fell View cut a pad and this put a stop to her championship hopes leaving the title to Leap Year .  Dreamer was still leading the pups but help for ” Bookie Baz” was on its way in the shape of Birkby Lass. It was pointed out by ” Newsman” that Tramore with 17 wins of which 16 were in the last two months of the season were very impressive  and a nod of appreciation from the Chair, bookie Baz.

Who stopped at the chippie in Shap on Sunday and waited an hour to be served.

Could have gone home and back in that time. No Rhyme or reason.

Oh yes and the remainder of the song.

Two wheels on my wagon and I’m just rolling along, Cuckoo Lane is after me and I’m  singing a happy song.

One wheel on my wagon or should that be my truck I’m stuck in a field on Dubbs Lane and I don’t give a F***.

No wheels on my wagon and I’m still rolling along I don’t care if I am late ‘cos i’m singing a song with my Best Mate.

Ambleside Sports in depth analysis.

The Chairman of the HTA replies to————-

On advice from the Chair the trailer who laid the starting end of the senior trail and who came under strong criticism from members will now “take stock” and contemplate whether it is worth taking a day of work for a uncalled for bollocking.

Therefore putting into serious doubt whether Rydal, Ings , Applethwaite and Kirkstone will continue., An idle threat , maybe ,but in reality it could happen.

And who could blame him, not me!

Lets start at the beginning – Ambleside has always been free entry for hound runners , therefore , immaterial of what the gateman says , you were entitled to free entry with your hound – if you paid you got your money returned, And as for spectators assembling on the finish , it’s been like that since time began you know what its like so why complain.

Behind the scenes — Due to a field full of stock , the gate , a water works metal spiked one, had to be opened and shut for each of the short trails, any  volunteers ?Now , you have to find somebody , at extremely short notice to “man the gate  “. And the trails manager was informed if nobody is found , the trail meeting will be cancelled. and up stepped  Steve , who had just paid a fiver to come in. He spent the duration of the three short trails swinging on a gate. How many hound men would have volunteered? Thanks Steve – We owe you one!

An early phone call to the trail manager, the finishing end trailers hurt his leg and cannot lay the trail, a replacement is found. only one thing he has never laid the finishing end of the senior trail. On taking advice from his co- trailer who pointed out the trail from the “split” he completed it successfully. The Co- trailer is the one who allegedly didn’t know his own half!

Another complaint – visitors are not aware of the result . It has been policy for a number of years that the entry clerk provided a results board, this year there wasn’t one , there will be changes and a result board will be provided at all the shows and  sport trails for the rest of the season. Also  results were slow to materialise this will be rectified forthwith.

The length of the senior trail, due to a misunderstanding between the timekeeper and myself the shout of “Trail” was, at least , shouted three minutes early, therefore anybody timing from 25 minutes will be three minutes “out”.

PS . The trailer earns £25 an hour. Ambleside took 4 hrs= £100.

Paid £25 loss on day = £75.
